Languedoc Roussillon
This stunning medium-bodied white wine is produced by Maxime Magnon, one of the top winemakers in the Corbières region, in the western Languedoc. He founded his domaine in 2002, having purchased parcels of old vines and renting a small cellar to make his wine. His approach to farming is organic, and he also follows biodynamic principles. His wine mentors are two well-known natural wine producers, Jean Foillard and Didier Barral. Maxime makes six different wines, five of which are red, made with the classic varieties of the region, Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault.
His one and only white wine is called “Le Bégou.” It is a blend of 50% Grenache Gris, 35% Grenache Blanc, and 15% Carignan Gris. The vines are between 50 and 60 years old and are planted in a mixture of limestone and schist. The wine was fermented in foudre with natural yeasts and aged in old oak barrels for ten months. The nose is absolutely gorgeous, with notes of citrus peel, lemon, and white flowers. The palate shows a beautiful richness, with a silky, almost white Burgundy-esque texture. The finish is long, with more citrus notes and a distinct mineral personality. This is delicious now but can be kept in the cellar, drinking through 2030.
